When my daughter first showed signs of hating herself, I got out photoshop. We went and found an image of her choosing, of a woman. I spent the next two hours showing her just how easy it was to alter this woman. I changed her hair, whitened her teeth, made her thinner. I erased her blemishes and even made her taller while my daughter sat there aghast. At the end of it she loudly said - ” THAT’S NOT FAIR!”

I told her that damn near every image she saw of people in magazines, on television, etc, was altered like this, and that she should never compare herself to that, because even supermodels don’t look like supermodels.

I wish I could do that for every child. I wish it was a mandatory class in school.

You know, I’ve seen this video campaign of the actual “transformation” process so many times, but I’ve never seen the shot of the billboard. That just made it brand new for me. It hit me like a bus - the realness, the severity of the beauty culture and idealized standards.

Random thought during abortion discussion in constitutional law:

If abortion were no longer legal, the state must pay for all pregnancy related costs after the point of illegality, because if the state interest is stronger than the mother’s interest (regardless of whether she wants the child or not), then THAT’S who should be paying for the medical costs.

I think if you shifted costs to the government and forced the pro-life taxpayers to put their money where their mouth is (rather than punishing women with the costs of pregnancy for daring to have sex, which is an underlying sentiment you can hear in certain arguments), the debate might become very different.

Boo-yah for great Constitutional Law classes!

This? Is fabulous.

I was thinking this morning (for you liberals and women that’s where you sit quietly and listen to your own thoughts and ideas not replay old episodes of The View on that blank space inside your skull) about how many pre-natal Americans are fighting a war with no support right at that moment as I lay comfortably in my bed. With nothing but their hands and feet, no eyes, no teeth to defend themselves, no strength they try to fight against chemical and mechanical attacks in the dark. And how grown woman and liberals are afraid of house spiders. You are the worst kind of people. Disgusting, selfish, awful, horrible people. I hope G-d will have mercy on you because we don’t.

Because I’ve NEVER met a conservative or a man that was afraid of spiders.
OH WAIT.
I hope G-d will have mercy on you because we don’t.
Christians who don’t espouse the “love thy neighbor” and “judge not lest ye be judged” are the worst kinds of Christians. I think you need to go back to church.

Quote reblogged from RED-BLOODED AMERICA with 154 notes

Sandra Fluke is leading the next wave of feminism, where “helplessness” is the new “strong”.

- Dennis Miller (via redbloodedamerica)

There is nothing helpless in her actions or in any person’s actions that seeks the same level of reproductive freedom and right to privacy granted persons without uteri. Heaven forbid a person ask to pay into an insurance plan that actually COVERS the preventative care they are required to have in order to keep a low premium.

They should just go ahead and stop abortion

and then be required by law to take care of ALL the babies that follow.

Pay for their food, education, clothing, EVERY FUCKING THING THEY NEED. Give up all their money and be forced to use all of their funds to take care of these children, and the mothers that gave birth to them.

Then we’ll see who’ll interfere in a woman’s reproductive rights then.

This has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever read on tumblr.  The mother is the one that got pregnant, not me or anyone else who is against abortion.  If you dodn’t want a baby then you should not have consented to sex, end of story.  Consent to sex may not be consent to a baby, but it is consent to the possibility.  If you have sex, then you should be prepared for the hardships that may come with a baby.  Pro-lifers want the baby to have a chance at life.

By this logic, if I consent to have sex with a person, it’s okay for that person to rape me later because I consented to the “possibility” of having sex with them again in the future.

Not at all.  You can consent to sex once, but that doesn’t mean you have told them you will have sex with them whenever they want.

That’s exactly right. Because affirmative consent means that consent can be revoked at any time — like any time that you don’t consent to lend your body anymore.

That includes pregnancy.

That does not include pregnancy.  As a direct result of the act of sex, you may get pregnant, due to your choices and your partners choices.  Rape is no longer your choice, but only the rapers choice.  You do not have the choice to end an life.

Having sex does not mean you choose to be pregnant, no more than having sex means that you choose to get an STD, or engage in later sex with a person, or even FINISH having sex with a person the first time you start. That is what affirmative consent is. By law, that’s how it works. Consent to one act is not consent to anything that follows.

I have the choice to end a pregnancy because nobody has the choice to use MY body without MY constant consent.

Oh no. People brought their kids to a protest (because nothing says great parenting like using your kids to forward your political cause), where they knew emotions would be high, and some protestors yelled in her general direction.

Somebody call the cops.

(Also? Parents who tell their children that people who disagree with them have no conscience and have no heart SHOULD NOT HAVE CHILDREN. You fail as a parent when you teach young children to disrespect people that are different from them. You are teaching them to think of their opponents as less than a person when you do that.)

On Feminism and Fat Acceptance

zombiehammer:

(My apologies for deleting the entire post, giving my dashboard a break.)

      I believe females should get equal rights.  All humans should.  But the way the majority of the knee-jerk feminist blogs on here go on about it, we’re actually living in about 1767.  But that’s not the real problem.  The REAL issue I have with it is that it is persuading impressionable young women that men are to be feared.

Society teaches women not to get raped rather than teaching people not to rape. When statistics show the inherent issues in rape culture, frequency of rape, etc, there is some fear to be felt from that. Here’s one source in particular. and I’ll copy and paste a few relevant numbers from that:

A survey of 11-to-14 year-olds found:(ref 5)
· 51% of the boys and 41% of the girls said forced sex was acceptable if the boy, “spent a lot of money” on the girl;
· 31% of the boys and 32% of the girls said it was acceptable for a man to rape a woman with past sexual experience;
· 87% of boys and 79% of girls said sexual assault was acceptable if the man and the woman were married;
· 65% of the boys and 47% of the girls said it was acceptable for a boy to rape a girl if they had been dating for more than six months.

Also:

- In a survey of male college students:
· 35% anonymously admitted that, under certain circumstances, they would commit rape if they believed they could get away with it (ref 6,7).
· One in 12 admitted to committing acts that met the legal definitions of rape, and 84% of men who committed rape did not label it as rape.(ref 6,7)

And then:

- In another survey of college males: (ref 8)
· 43% of college-aged men admitted to using coercive behavior to have sex, including ignoring a woman’s protest, using physical aggression, and forcing intercourse.
· 15% acknowledged they had committed acquaintance rape; 11% acknowledged using physical restraints to force a woman to have sex.

Information also shows that most rapes are committed by persons that the victim knows. There is a REASON there is wariness involved in this discussion.

And the rest of this is going under a cut, because damn it’s lengthy.
