Question with 1 note
meadeskelton asked: Hello,I would lke to ask you this:If you're only thinking of yourself and your own pleasure, terminating a life that is within, is a murder, is it not? Outlawing abortion will never happen. Our country is morally corrupt, people want to toss life away. But the government should not be forced to pay for abortions or support abortions. Its up to the state.
1. Y’know, when it comes to my own life and my ability to take care of myself, health-wise, financially, spiritually, mentally? I’m allowed to be selfish. It’s my life. Also, I’m not just thinking of “my own pleasure” — I’m also (perhaps not during) thinking about the benefits that I receive to my blood pressure, endorphins for pain relief, the reduction of risk for certain types of cancer, better sleep patterns, and other various health benefits that safe sexual activity has for a person.
2. No — I don’t view it as murder, because murder is a legal term. Is a fetus a form a life? Yes. But I still have the right to consent to whether or not it’s allowed to exist in my body for nine months. It can take its chances outside. Potential humans do not get priority over the civil rights of humans that are already here, and consent to sex is not consent to pregnancy.
3. (I’m doing these out of order because I’m going to go a bit longer on the other one) The government doesn’t pay for abortions. If people want them they have to pay for them out of pocket, and it’s expensive. Institutions like Planned Parenthood use government funding for pregnancy tests, sex education, contraceptives for those that cannot afford them, breast exams (and they also provide financial aid for those with a referral for a mammogram at a hospital, after something is found), STD testing, counseling, and other things. There are no abortions paid for by the government. It shouldn’t be up to the state OR the federal government. It should be up to the people that need the service.
4. Outlawing abortion will never happen (and should never happen) because there will always be cases where it is absolutely necessary, such as (just one example) rape. (Yes, some victims can see a child as the one good thing to come out of something horrible, but they can only do that if they CHOOSE to view it that way, and forcing that belief on them and telling them to feel that way is rape all over again.)
This has nothing to do with people waking up in the morning and thinking “I’d like to snuff out some potential life today!” and it’s really easy to assume that view of other people because it makes it easier to oppose them. It’s just also not true, in the slightest. If you want to reduce abortion, however, statistics show that rates of abortion have declined as comprehensive sex education and access to contraception has become more widespread. We’re actually almost back to the rate in the US that was there before Roe V. Wade was passed, because of this. If you want to save lives, keep safe facilities where abortions can be done, if they absolutely must be, available, and make accurate information about safe sex available to everyone who is at the age of consent or higher. Support those programs that teach teenagers how to put on condoms and tells them about all forms of contraception and prevention. Support research toward birth control that will continue to reduce accidents and flukes, rare though they are. Support research that will produce other forms of contraception, like condoms, that continue to be effective but are not uncomfortable for men to wear. Support programs that will assist low-income persons who have become pregnant — both during the pregnancy and after birth — and make them not only available but universally well-known. Federally investigate Pregnancy Crisis Centers that disseminate inaccurate information about pregnancy, sex and abortion — like that the pill and abortion cause cancer. Increase the flow of information and aid, and you will save lives. Abstinence Only sex education, however (not the CHOICE to be abstinent, but teaching it as the only effective form of contraception), is Pro Igorance and therefore Anti-Life.
